    Shot-Noise Signatures of 0.7 Structure and Spin in a Quantum Point Contact

    We report simultaneous measurement of shot noise and dc transport in a quantum point contact as a function of source-drain bias, gate voltage, and in-plane magnetic field. Shot noise at zero field exhibits an asymmetry related to the 0.7 structure in conductance. The asymmetry in noise evolves smoothly into the symmetric signature of spin-resolved electron transmission at high field.     Randomized controlled trial of a good practice approach to treatment of childhood obesity in Malaysia: Malaysian childhood obesity treatment trial (MASCOT)

    Context. Few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of interventions for the treatment of childhood obesity have taken place outside the Western world. Aim. To test whether a good practice intervention for the treatment of childhood obesity would have a greater impact on weight status and other outcomes than a control condition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Methods. Assessor-blinded RCT of a treatment intervention in 107 obese 7- to 11-year olds. The intervention was relatively low intensity (8 hours contact over 26 weeks, group based), aiming to change child sedentary behavior, physical activity, and diet using behavior change counselling. Outcomes were measured at baseline and six months after the start of the intervention. Primary outcome was BMI z-score, other outcomes were weight change, health-related quality of life (Peds QL), objectively measured physical activity and sedentary behavior (Actigraph accelerometry over 5 days). Results. The intervention had no significant effect on BMI z score relative to control. Weight gain was reduced significantly in the intervention group compared to the control group (+1.5 kg vs. +3.5 kg, respectively, t-test p < 0.01). Changes in health-related quality of life and objectively measured physical activity and sedentary behavior favored the intervention group. Conclusions. Treatment was associated with reduced rate of weight gain, and improvements in physical activity and quality of life. More substantial benefits may require longer term and more intensive interventions which aim for more substantive lifestyle changes

    Density dependent spin polarisation in ultra low-disorder quantum wires

    There is controversy as to whether a one-dimensional (1D) electron gas can spin polarise in the absence of a magnetic field. Together with a simple model, we present conductance measurements on ultra low-disorder quantum wires supportive of a spin polarisation at B=0. A spin energy gap is indicated by the presence of a feature in the range 0.5 - 0.7 X 2e^2/h in conductance data. Importantly, it appears that the spin gap is not static but a function of the electron density. Data obtained using a bias spectroscopy technique are consistent with the spin gap widening further as the Fermi-level is increased.Comment: 5 Pages 4 Figures email:[email protected]

    In this short article, I argue that popular business discourse on the role of management consultancy in the promotion and translation of management ideas is often critical, informed by more or less implicit ethical and political concerns with employee security, equity, openness and the transparency and legitimacy of responsibility. These concerns are, in part, ‘sayable’ because their object is seen as a scapegoat for management. Nevertheless, combined with the popular form of their expression, they can support and legitimize critical studies of management learning, a discipline which otherwise has become overly concerned with processual and situational phenomena at the expense of broader political dynamics and of the content and consequences of management and management knowledg

    Kondo model for the "0.7 anomaly" in transport through a quantum point contact

    Experiments on quantum point contacts have highlighted an anomalous conductance plateau at 0.7(2e2/h)0.7 (2e^2/h), with features suggestive of the Kondo effect. Here we present an Anderson model for transport through a point contact which we analyze in the Kondo limit. Hybridization to the band increases abruptly with energy but decreases with valence, so that the background conductance and the Kondo temperature TKT_K are dominated by different valence transitions. This accounts for the high residual conductance above TKT_K. A spin-polarized current is predicted for Zeeman splitting g∗μBB>kBTK,kBTg^* \mu_B B > k_B T_K,k_BT.Comment: 4 page

    Changes in magnetic scattering anisotropy at a ferromagnetic/superconducting interface

    We show that some metals and alloys (X = Cu, Ag, FeMn, or Cu and Ag combined with each other), sputtered between ferromagnetic Co and superconducting Nb, produce no change in current-perpendicular-to-plane magnetoresistance (CPP-MR) in a carefully designed CPP-spin-valve. In contrast, other metals (Ru or Au) or combinations (Cu or Ag combined with Au, Ru, or FeMn) change the CPP-MR, in some cases even reversing its sign. We ascribe these changes to activation of magnetic scattering anisotropies at a ferromagnetic/superconducting interface, apparently by strong spin-flipping between the Co and Nb layers.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Modeling Uncertainty in Climate Change: A Multi-Model Comparison

    The economics of climate change involves a vast array of uncertainties, complicating both the analysis and development of climate policy. This study presents the results of the first comprehensive study of uncertainty in climate change using multiple integrated assessment models. The study looks at model and parametric uncertainties for population, total factor productivity, and climate sensitivity. It estimates the pdfs of key output variables, including CO2 concentrations, temperature, damages, and the social cost of carbon (SCC). One key finding is that parametric uncertainty is more important than uncertainty in model structure. Our resulting pdfs also provide insights on tail events

    Horizontal Lloyd mirror patterns from straight and curved nonlinear internal waves

The definitive version was published in Journal of the Acoustical Society of America 131 (2012): 1689-1700, doi:10.1121/1.3666004.Experimental observations and theoretical studies show that nonlinear internal waves occur widely in shallow water and cause acoustic propagation effects including ducting and mode coupling. Horizontal ducting results when acoustic modes travel between internal wave fronts that form waveguide boundaries. For small grazing angles between a mode trajectory and a front, an interference pattern may arise that is a horizontal Lloyd mirror pattern. An analytic description for this feature is provided along with comparisons between results from the formulated model predicting a horizontal Lloyd mirror pattern and an adiabatic mode parabolic equation. Different waveguide models are considered, including boxcar and jump sound speed profiles where change in sound speed is assumed 12 m/s. Modifications to the model are made to include multiple and moving fronts. The focus of this analysis is on different front locations relative to the source as well as on the number of fronts and their curvatures and speeds. Curvature influences mode incidence angles and thereby changes the interference patterns. For sources oriented so that the front appears concave, the areas with interference patterns shrink as curvature increases, while convexly oriented fronts cause patterns to expand.The authors thank the Office of Naval Research for funding this work.
